I like to eat, and take pictures...sometimes at the same time. Skateboarding's awesome, too. Mangia!
I love vegetables as much as the next person, but some sandwiches, especially hot ones, need to be straight meat so as not to upset the balance of taste and consistency. For example, a cheesesteak shouldn’t have tomatoes or pickles all up in it…not only does it make the bread potentially soggy, it takes a salty and savory meal and adds in weird sourness and unwanted wetness. A cold cut sando piled with veggies is good to go all day, but leave the warm meat combos simple. This sando was great could have benefitted from more meat, less veggies… (at Primo Patio Cafe)

One of my favorite spots in SOMA, used to go here with @epiclytrife and Zooch back in the day. Ah, the simple life. (at Primo Patio Cafe)

It’s kinda cool to go somewhere now that before you couldn’t afford, or at least thought you couldn’t… (at A.G. Ferrari)

I remember one time many years ago, when I was still working at @thrashermag, I was helping Mark G edit one of his art films at the plant on a weekend. He used to pick me up and we’d go get lunch then work on his projects. One day he got some sandwiches and Pellegrino waters from AG Ferrari before we got into the editing room and his creative process. I remember when we ate in that tiny room downstairs of the mag, everything about that lunch seemed so fancy…the name of the place, the specialty meats, the artisan cheeses and pâté we got on the sandos, the Italian bottled water. Even the fact that we munched on the food in his Mercedes tripped me out. I was used to eating a steady diet of pasta, beer and burritos like all my other broke skater buddies. Everything seemed so high class, but when it came down to talking about skateboarding and what we both loved and hated about it, I realized skateboarding was a universal equalizer and at the end of the day, it’s all about the fun and enjoyment you get from it and that skateboarding crosses all thresholds of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, creed, religion, etc. We’re all in the same gang no matter what. Man, I have so many good memories from that time period… (at A.G. Ferrari)

One of the best things about food is the texture…I love the consistency of good, firm, crunchy granola, chips and the like. Here is an excellent example of above requisites for a great snack…have you tried this one @squishycoco? Gluten free cranberry maple nut granola from TJ’s

I was literally eating this and thinking of @cdamigone when she called from China! What a trip…I guess the home cooked comfort meal vibes of pasta resonated all the way across the world. Love and miss you, can’t wait for you to get back…but enjoy the trip and take lots of photos!

After I ate this sando, I didn’t eat for another 24 hours… (at Roxie Food Center)

Even it’s not over yet, today was a great day! There wasn’t any specific big event that made it awesome, it was more of a culmination of small things adding up making me feel happy, positive and accomplished. I slept in, cleaned the house, listened to the Beatles (automatic good mood enhancer), picked up the dry cleaning, walked and played with the dog, set up a new skateboard for a friend’s younger sister, got cool text messages from friends, did the laundry, paid bills, got paid for something from a while ago, finished up all the loose ends from the traffic accident last week, went grocery shopping and ate a delicious dinner. I found parking right across the street from the restaurant, was seated right when I walked in, and even got an extra shrimp tempura in my appetizer! Bonus! One top of all that, I ordered the salmon sashimi dinner like I always do, as well as the tempura udon…when my salmon came out, it was only the appetizer, not the full meal. The waitress said she made the order an appetizer since it seemed to be a big amount of food and was cheaper! Ha! Good looking out! Friendly service and full stomach with just the right amount. I feel thankful, blessed and content. (at Kitaro Japanese Restaurant)

I’ve been on a fried chicken craze for the last few weeks…not sure why, but I can’t seem to get enough. I think my favorite place to get it for a sit down is either at The Front Porch in the Outer Mission, or Citizen’s Band in SOMA. Farmer Brown has good one, too. Fast food, although I don’t do it too much, seems to excel in this area though…my personal favorite is Popeye’s. It always reminds me of visiting my Dad at work when he worked here in SF…every now and then, he would be at his neat and proper desk job at corporate BOFA with a box or bag of Popeye’s on top of some random paperwork. He was a very neat and clean guy by nature, (old style Italian immigrant family, ex-miltiary, etc,) so I’m guessing the papers where he placed that greasy chicken were none too important. I think when I was a kid, I just liked the fried chicken and cartoon characters but now as an adult I like the idea that maybe my dad would subtly be saying take these papers and documents and shove it…

I grew up watching and rooting for both the A’s and Giants. I remember going to games as a little kid and what a big deal it seemed like…the huge amount of people, fan apparel and fun foods. I remember one time going to Candlestick with a neighborhood friend and her dad, and getting a small wooden Giants bat, which I know I still have somewhere. Bleacher seats were $3 and life was simple. As I grew older and got more into skateboarding, I tended to steer away from team sports and learned how to be creative in my own way as an individual. I still played soccer until high school and did crew during college, but skateboarding was, and is, my life. Now I love sporting events because of the social factor and appreciation of the sheer skills and love of the game. Jock shit? Nah, just love and appreciation for a good time in all forms.
